Overcoming the Past

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,

I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. (Phil. 3:13-14)

Many people struggle with their past. They live with it for a long time. They obsess with it each day. And many times it is something that happened to them a long time ago. I have learned the best way to overcome the past is to stop talking about it. I disagree with psychology that believes you should discuss all of your feelings. Talking about it once may be OK but not over and over again.

Be careful for nothing: but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Be careful means not to worry or be anxious about anything. Give God all your burdens.

And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Phil. 4:6-7)

You don’t have to pray for peace. If you give God all of your burdens then He will give you peace of heart and mind.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever thing are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Those things, which you have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you. (Phil. 4:8-9)

I encourage you to set goals each day and try to do something productive with each and every day. Ask God to help you with this. Live one day at a time and don’t worry about the future either. Overcoming the past has alot to do with how much faith you have in God. Don’t give up!

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him.

For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. (1 John 3:18-20)

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the (Holy) Spirit. (Romans 8:1)

The sooner you close the door on your past. The sooner God will open the door to your future.

These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)

Read Romans 8:35-39!

How to Understand the Bible

I want to explain how to understand the Bible. Many Christians today don’t understand the Bible. If all you get is at church on Sunday then you are not learning very much. You need to read and study the Bible every day that you can.

Psalm 19:7-11

v.7 The law of the Lord is perfect converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

v.8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.

v.9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

v.10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

v.11 Moreover by them is your servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

What I like to do is to know the background and history of a book in the Bible before I read it. There are commentaries you can buy and do some research on each book of the Bible. For example, Genesis was written to explain the creation and the beginning of mankind. It explains the history of how God created the world and all living things including men and women. God chose Abram to follow Him and be the father of many people. Which later became known as Abraham. Then we get the story of the children of Israel. Fast forward thousands of years later and we have the birth of the church through Christ.

Next, I suggest using a translation of the Bible that you can understand. Some people have trouble understanding the King James Version but that is the Bible I suggest reading. I think other translations take away and diminish the meaning of too many scriptures. If you don’t want the King James Version maybe you could get the ESV or the New King James Version. I think the King James Version is more accurate than others.

The Bible that I use is the Hebrew/Greek Key Study Bible King James Version. I like it because I can translate the English words into Hebrew in the Old Testament or Greek in the New Testament. They are numbered to the Strong’s Concordance which I also suggest that you use to help look up verses. The translating explains the original meaning of various words. Example, the word “haling” found in Acts 8:3 is not what we think it is. We think of “hauling” as loading up and taking away. But the Greek translation means to grab by the hair of the head and to drag. This verse is talking about when Saul (before he was called Paul) was persecuting the church. And taking Christians to prison. You can see there is a BIG difference in what the Greek describes compared to what we use today.

In John 16:13 Jesus said the Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth. When you are reading or studying the Bible don’t rush through it because you won’t get much out of it. Instead, take your time and think about what you are reading. The Holy Spirit will guide you but you must be willing to follow His lead by listening to what He says and inspires you to do. Sometimes the Holy Spirit will put a thought in your head to teach you something. For example, I will be reading the Bible and may think of another verse that is similar to the one I am reading. Go ahead and look it up and the Holy Spirit will show you something. If you were looking for gold or some other treasure or money. You wouldn’t give up on your search very easily. So don’t give up searching the scriptures.

Another thing you can do is compare translations and see what you learn that way. Sometimes I like to do that but  most of the time I just use my Hebrew/Greek Bible. The Amplified Bible is another one that is good to use. Pray about it and let the Lord help you with it.

I encourage you to read and study the Bible every day of the week. I know many of you are very busy so just take 30 minutes to an hour each day.

The difference between reading and studying the Bible is reading is when just read chapter after chapter in daily reading which is good. Studying is when you research verses by looking up cross references to various verses. You don’t have to look up every single verse. Just do the ones you are interested in.

One way you can study is to study a topic or word such as “grace”. Don’t just look up the word grace but also the chapter where it is found. This will give you a better understanding of each topic. Take notes on the things that you learn. When you eat a meal you take one bite at a time. You don’t have to try to learn everything in one day.

What is the Great Commission?

Most Christians don’t know the answer to this question. And the same can be said about the preachers today. Many preachers think that preaching the gospel is the Great Commission but that is not true and it is not Biblical. Preaching is only part of it but it is not all of it. There are 11 things that make up the Great Commission.

Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. (Mark 16:15)

There are 4 things I want to point out in this verse. First, “Go” means to travel. Christians will tell you that if sinners want to hear the gospel they can go to any church. That is the exact opposite of what Jesus commanded in this verse for us to do today. We are responsible for spreading the gospel to reach the lost. And we are not doing it.

Not all preachers are pastors who stay in one location. There are other preachers and evangelists who can travel to spread the gospel all over the world and not just in America only. One BIG reason preachers aren’t doing this is because they don’t have enough support financially and in prayers.  “How shall they preach except they be sent”? (Romans 10:15)

Another reason is they aren’t hungry for the Lord. Some preachers used to be on fire for the Lord. But when you look at them today there is no zeal, no hunger and no passion in them. We have more than enough preachers to reach millions of people throughout the world. Some tv preachers are satisfied with reaching people on tv but there is more to it than just preaching.

“all the world” is us reaching ALL of the world and NOT just America. How could we go on for so many years not reaching other nations? I understand the doors were closed to some places but not all of them. Look at how many preachers we have in America compared to the rest of the world.

The disciples and Early Church traveled all over the then known world. And without all of the technology that we have access to today. You know I think we should be ashamed of ourselves for not doing a better job at spreading the gospel to other countries. I know we have Christian TV today but not everybody is watching it. And that doesn’t give us an excuse not to go there in person when Jesus told us to do it. We only have a small number of preachers in other countries. What we would do in America if we only had half of the preachers here? I bet people wouldn’t care for it.

“preach the gospel”. Many people in the pulpit today are not preaching the gospel. Instead they give some “feel-good speech”. Where is the Bible in all these church services in America? I am not hearing the Word of God during the speeches. I refuse to call it preaching a sermon if it isn’t Biblical.

“to every creature”. Are we reaching everybody? If not then we better get to work and stop wasting time. God the Father wants to adopt EVERYBODY into His family today! I think the church has dropped the ball big time and needs to repent. We have time and money for everything else except for spreading the gospel.  Why are we so selfish? Jesus told us to lay up treasure in Heaven. When we reach the lost we are laying up treasure in Heaven. I encourage you to reach the lost today and support your local church.

He that believes AND is baptized shall be saved; but he that doesn’t believe shall be damned. (Mark 16:16)

We need to know that baptism does NOT save you! Jesus does! Believe means to entrust one’s spiritual well being to Christ. If you get baptized in water without accepting Christ into your heart. You will start out a dry sinner and end up a wet one. The blood of Jesus is what washes our sins away NOT water baptism.

And these signs shall follow them that BELIEVE; In MY name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. (Mark 16:17)

Here is what I wanted to get into. We need to cast out devils and speak in tongues. This is not a new teaching. It has been around for years, 2000 years.  The Early Church cast out devils in their day and age. How many times during a church service have you seen a preacher cast out a devil out of somebody there? Some churches don’t believe in tongues. I don’t know why, the Bible clearly teaches that speaking in tongues is of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who gives the gifts to different people. They are NOT done away with. They are still here today. They won’t leave until the rapture because that is when the Holy Spirit will leave along with the Body of Christ. I wonder if these people would be offended if I told them Jesus spoke in tongues.

“They shall take up serpents”

This means you will have power and authority over the devil. It does NOT mean a literal snake.

“and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover”. (Mark 16:18)

How many times do people get healed in church services today? I don’t see preachers praying for the sick around the altar these days. I have heard stuff like “We will pray for you”.  I witnessed “meditation time” instead of prayer. You can meditate all you want to and not get healed. The church neglects prayer today and is very pitiful when you can’t even get people to pray at church. I have heard every EXCUSE you can think of. I have heard “most people pray at home”. Do they really??? Jesus said “My house shall be called A HOUSE OF PRAYER”.

With God

“With men these things are impossible but WITH GOD all things are possible”. (Matthew 19:26)

Most Christians don’t understand what it means to be “with God”. “With God” takes on various things in our walk with God. Such as prayer, love, faith, obedience, Bible study, praise, worship, baptism of the Holy Ghost, spiritual gifts, etc.

With God is all about us partnering with God through faith,  obedience and the anointing. Jesus said “Have faith in God”. If we don’t have faith in God then we won’t partner with Him. When we have much faith in God we will see His hand at work in our lives more often. Versus only having a little bit of faith in Him. But we can move mountains with just a little bit of faith.

Whoever shall say unto this mountain, Be removed and cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he says shall come to pass; he shall have whatever he says. (Mark 11:23)

Therefore I say unto you, Whatever you DESIRE, when you pray, BELIEVE that you receive them and you shall have them. (Mark 11:24)

Many people today miss out on what God has for them because of unbelief. Stop trying to overcome your problems on your own. Partner with God and be victorious over EVERYTHING in your life. You don’t have to be defeated, you are a child of the living God. He is your Father and He cares about every part of your life. Some preachers say God only cares about your soul. That is NOT true at all! Jesus came to give you an abundant life. (Read John 10:10) Don’t settle for less in your life when God wants to bless ALL of your life. God wants to bless all of your spiritual, physical, financial and social needs.

We are God’s children and should learn to be His partner in everything that we do. God wants to have a close relationship with each one of us. Preachers aren’t more important to God than others.

Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary. And those members of the body, which we think to be less honorable,  upon these we bestow more abundant honor; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. (1 Corinthians 12:22-23)

The best two ways to be with God is prayer and the anointing. OK three, and love. Without prayer there is no anointing. I used to pray for 8 hours a day and I was anointed during those days. The Holy Spirit showed me many things while I was in the Spirit during prayer and even after I was done praying.

Prayer is a great way to be in perfect harmony and unity with God. I think too many times we Christians get caught up in our daily lives and our problems. Then we leave God out of our lives by not going to Him in prayer and allowing God to take care of the situation we are dealing with at the time.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding. In ALL YOUR WAYS acknowledge God and He will direct your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us. (Ephesians 3:20)

“Exceeding abundantly” means greater in quantity or superior quality. “Power” means miraculous power. And “worketh” means actively working.

God is awesome! He wants to do great and mighty things in YOUR life today! Anything that we want or need is available to each one of us through prayer. If we will pray and have faith in God then we will be blessed. I like to thank God BEFORE He blesses me.

I mentioned the anointing earlier. I enjoy the spiritual gifts that most people either don’t believe in or they neglect them. Most Pentecostal believers act like tongues is the only gift. The Bible says there are 9 of them. I have had 5 of them in my life and none of them were tongues. My personal favorite gift is prophecy. I encourage you to learn as much as you can about spiritual gifts. I plan on doing a study on them here on the site in a few weeks. I will go in to detail about each gift.

I mentioned love after that. The best way to live for God is by using the spiritual gifts with love. Then you will do very good. People don’t understand what Paul was teaching in 1 Corinthians chapter 13. He was not saying that spiritual gifts weren’t important. He was saying to use them with love is far better. Without love we have nothing in our salvation. You can talk in tongues all you want to but without love it is nothing. You can preach and sing and do whatever but without love you don’t know God. And if you don’t know God then you are not with God.

Power of the Tongue

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21)

Most Christians problems are right under their nose. We speak words of death every single day. How many times a day do you say “I will NEVER be rich”? Or “I will NEVER get healed”? These are words of death! If you talk like that then stop doing it. How about this one? “God will NEVER answer my prayer”. These are things Christians deal with every day of our lives. It is always something.

We can’t always control what happens in our life but we can control how we react to it. “Walk by faith and not by sight”. (2 Cor. 5:7) We live by what we see, hear and feel way too often. Instead, we should walk by faith. Which means to be occupied by faith. Prayer and Bible study are very important in our walk with God. When we have a close and intimate relationship with God the Father through prayer. It will change the way we react to certain situations in our life. Prayer also helps us to understand the Bible.  And the Bible helps us to understand how to pray. I like to use my Bible when I pray. I am always looking up verses and reminding the Father of His promises to us.

Speaking the Bible, which is the Word of God, out loud increases our faith in God. We need to speak things that are spiritual instead of things that are carnal. When we speak the Word of God that is spiritual. But when we speak what man and the world says then we are carnal. How did God create the world? Words! God said “Let there be light: and there was light”. I have spoken words of healing into my body several times and I was totally healed. I rebuked the devil in the name of Jesus, quoted the healing promises in the Bible (1 Peter 2:24, Proverbs 18:21, Matthew 9:22, etc.) and praised the Lord for healing me because praise is the language of faith.

This applies to every part of our life not just healing. Have faith in God in EVERY part of your life. Let me tell you what I have learned about spiritual warfare. The devil doesn’t know what your problems are unless you tell him. When you are talking to others don’t complain about your problems. If you do the devil will hear it and know how to attack you. I went awhile without the devil being able to be successful at tempting me. I refused to talk about any of my problems. I didn’t even pray about it. Instead, I prayed for others who had the same problem that I had. And I said “the entire Body of Christ” in my prayer that way I was included too without ever saying whether or not I had a problem.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you”. (James 4:7)

Most people quote this verse wrong by only saying the last part of it. They say “Resist the devil and he will flee from you”. But that is not what the Bible teaches. You must FIRST submit to God. That is how you resist the devil. Thank God every day for what you are believing Him to do in your life and those you pray for. Then you will see God’s hand at work in your life.

“We are more than conquerors through Him that loved us”. (Romans 8:37)

Religion or Relationship?

Do you have religion? Or do you have a relationship with Jesus? Anybody can go to church and claim to be a Christian. Sitting in a church won’t make you a Christian. You can be a member of a church your whole life. Sing in the choir, be the pastor, deacon and on the committee. But if you are not born again you will go to hell.

Not every one that says unto Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that DOES the will of My Father which is in heaven.

Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name? And in Your name have cast out devils? And in Your name done many wonderful works?

And then will I profess unto them, I NEVER KNEW YOU: depart from Me, you that work iniquity. (Matthew 7:21-23)

If you don’t have a relationship with Jesus then you are NOT a Christian. Have you invited Jesus into your heart? Have you accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior? Many people say they love the Lord but never obey Him.

Jesus said “If you love Me, keep My commandments”. (John 14:15)

There is a spirit of religion in the church today. We go through the motions of serving the Lord. We offer lip service but aren’t sincere with our praise and worship. Let’s face the facts. Anybody can be nice and behave themselves for one hour a week.  Then go home and live like a devil the rest of the week. This is called hypocrisy. When you claim to be something that your not then you are a hypocrite.

Worshipping God is more than just singing a song at church and feeling good about ourselves because we did “the right thing”.  Worship is about the way you live. Do you obey God? People make excuses all of the time by saying “nobody is perfect”. There is a difference between a sin of weakness and a willful sin.

Jesus said “God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him “in spirit and in truth”. (John 4:24)

“Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness” (Psalms 96:9)

Be DOERS of the word and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. (James 1:22)

MANY churches operate under a “spirit of witchcraft”. By that I mean they control others. When you control somebody else that is witchcraft. That is NOT of God and needs to be dealt with. You have people leading the church that don’t know the Bible and are not born again. When a real preacher preaches a message that the Holy Spirit gave him. The committee gets offended and reprimands him. Warning him not to do it again or else.

I think there are MANY people in the pulpit and on the committee that have no business being there. READ 1 TIMOTHY 3 I won’t go over the entire chapter here but I will mention two things: able to teach and not double-tongued.

Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, RIGHTLY DIVIDING THE WORD OF TRUTH. (2 Timothy 2:15)

Shun profane and vain babblings: for they will INCREASE unto more ungodliness. (2 Timothy 2:16)

This verse is talking about what the church is preaching and teaching. The word “profane” means to cross the doorway of Jewish notions, specifically wickedness.

The phrase “vain babblings” means empty sounding i.e. fruitless discussion.

Many preachers ramble on from the pulpit not really teaching anything from the Bible. And they take verses out of context to make a point to fit their own agenda. And we wonder why the churches are not growing in the Lord and in the faith. It is because of lack of leadership in the pulpit and during Sunday school. Preachers need to encourage the congregation to pray and read the Bible every single day. And reach the lost. If they don’t know how to witness then how do you expect them to win souls? If they don’t understand the Bible then don’t expect them to live a victorious life in Christ.

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. (Ephesians 4:29)

Many people think this verse is talking about using foul language or other sinful speech. It is not talking about that at all. The word “corrupt” means worthless. To say things that are worthless or meaningless is what that verse means. Some preachers use their pulpit for everything but preaching the Word of God. God knows everything that goes on in these churches and they will be held accountable. I have been praying that everybody that the devil has put in the church to do his work will be exposed and expelled from the church.

If you refuse to repent then God can’t use you for anything but an example to others. As far as what happens to people when they are judged by God. In the book of Acts a couple named Ananias and Sapphira were judged by God and fell down dead in front of everybody there. The Bible says “and great fear fell upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things”. Imagine what would happen to churches if that happened to us today. God did it before and don’t be surprised if God does it again.

The other thing I want to talk about is being “double-tongued”.  You have leaders of the church going around talking about everybody in the church behind their backs. But when they are face to face with them they are so nice to them. How can you trust that kind of person? Is that the kind of person you want in a leadership position in your church? According to the Bible they don’t even qualify to be a leader in the church. Again read 1 Timothy 3 for more about this.

Can You Lose Your Salvation?

Some people say you can lose your salvation while others say you can’t. Alot of these thoughts come from what we have been taught in church and at home. What does the Bible say about this?

He that overcomes, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not BLOT out his name out of the BOOK OF LIFE, but I will confess his name before My Father, and before His angels. (Rev. 3:5)

And whosoever was NOT FOUND WRITTEN in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (Rev. 20:15)

If you read the entire passage in Revelation 3:1-6 it will give you a better understanding of what Jesus is talking about. Jesus was warning Christians to repent or face judgment and lose their salvation. You may ask “Where does it say that”? Notice the first word I put in caps, blot. Jesus is saying He will blot out certain people’s names from the book of life. Those are the people who have defiled their garments through sin and being unfaithful to Christ.

When you get saved Jesus writes your name in the book of life. If you lose your salvation then He blots out your name from the book of life. There is a thing called apostasy which is when you refuse to repent and have hardened your heart. And have reached a point in your life where God can’t even deal with you any more because you reached the point of no return which is apostasy.

This is not a new thing. It happened several times in the Old Testament. God would deal with Israel and Judah then give them time to repent. But many times they didn’t repent and faced judgment. God judged them by sending enemies to fight against them in war and take them into captivity.

In the Old Testament, there were many children of Israel who were judged by God. They rebelled against what Moses told them to do which was a direct commandment from God Himself. The ground opened up and many of them were swallowed up and went to hell.

If your name is not found in the book of life you will go to hell forever and there is no escape from it. You will suffer from torment and torture forever. I don’t know why people will not open their minds to the truth found in the Bible. They act like if somebody who founded their denomination says something is true then that settles it. Regardless of what the Bible teaches which is the written Word of God. Are you going to argue with God? If you disagree with the Bible then you are against God. Jesus said in John 17:17 “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth”.

It is possible to commit the unpardonable sin which is blasphemy against the Holy Ghost. People who mock the Holy Ghost by saying that speaking in tongues is from the devil are committing blasphemy. I hear narrow minded people speak against the work of the Holy Ghost. To be more specific, they speak against the gifts of the Spirit that are found in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10. Those gifts are: word of wisdom, word of knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues and interpretation of tongues.

I want to encourage YOU to study the Bible for yourself and learn what it says. Instead of taking the preacher’s or teacher’s word for something. Why not study it for yourself?

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and SEARCHED THE SCRIPTURES DAILY, whether those things were so. (Acts 17:11)

Those in Berea in that verse studied the Bible to see if what they heard was true or not.

STUDY to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15)

Everybody needs Jesus

I just want to take a few minutes to tell you about Jesus if you don’t know Him. Jesus is the best friend you will ever have. He will never leave you or forsake you. Giving your heart to Jesus isn’t about religion. It is about having a relationship with Jesus.

Jesus is the Son of the living God. He came from heaven to die for you and everybody who would call on Him. Simply put. Jesus died so you can live. He rose from the dead and is alive today! That same Jesus who was on the cross wants to have a relationship with you. He wants to be your Lord, Savior, Healer, Redeemer and friend.

Some people think that they aren’t good enough to become a Christian. Come to Jesus as you are. He will forgive you for all of your sins. Then write your name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. That way when you die you can go to heaven. Just think of how awesome that will be in heaven. All the people that died before us, angels, God the Father and Jesus.

You don’t have to wait another minute to get saved. You can do it right now. And you don’t have to wait to enjoy life you can do that now too. Ask God to forgive you of all of your sins and ask Jesus to come into your heart and be your Lord and Savior.

The Bible says that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. It is just that easy! Go ahead and do it now.

Pray to God and read the Bible every day. Just talk to God as you would your best friend. Maybe you have questions or concerns you want to talk to God about. Just be yourself and know that God is your Father. Read the New Testament first to learn more about Jesus and being a Christian. Then you can read the Old Testament.

Find a good church to go to and go at least once a week. Pray to God the Father and ask Him to help you to find a good church to go to.

How to Pray for a Sinner According to Scripture

I want to show you how to pray for sinners according to scripture. This way we can get better results when we pray for sinners to get saved. We won’t waste any precious time praying aimless prayers that never accomplish what we want.

#1 Prepare their heart to receive the Word of God

Part of Matthew 13:23 refers to the “good ground” which is the heart. Love will melt a person’s heart and make it soft. Then their heart will be prepared to receive the Word of God. You don’t sow seed on hard and stony ground. You need a soft, tender good ground to produce a harvest.

Say not, There are four months, and then comes harvest? I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. (John 4:35)

So when we witness to sinners we will have good results with those who have a soft, tender, melted and prepared heart that is ready to receive the Word of God. Love encourages and motivates people to live a better and more fulfilling life. It brings joy, peace, comfort and hope. Hope in believing they can live a good life filled with blessings and the goodness of God.

Psalm 136 is full of mercy with each verse ending with “His mercy endures forever”. How many times has God shown mercy to sinners and they repented? Mercy can come through several different ways such as forgiveness, food, clothing, shelter, good health, healing, deliverance, traveling mercy, protection, a financial blessing, marriage, etc. which often leads to salvation. There have been many times that people got healed and were so thankful and touched by God they gave their heart to Jesus. There were times in the gospels where Jesus would heal or deliver somebody from bondage and they repented and believed in Him. So ask God to prepare their heart through love, mercy and goodness.

#2 Lies and deception

In whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of them which believe not, unless the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. (2 Corinthians 4:4)

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on Him, If you continue in My word, then are you My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:31-32)

The only way to counter a lie is by giving them the truth. Jesus said “Sanctify them through Your truth: Your word is truth”. (John 17:17) Pray for them to receive the truth and to be delivered from the stronghold of deception.

#3 Understanding

Then He opened their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures. (Luke 24:45)

“Understanding is a wellspring of life” (Prov. 16:22)

“With all your getting get understanding” (Prov. 4:7)

When anyone hears the Word of the kingdom, and doesn’t understand it, then comes the wicked one, and catches away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. (Matthew 13:19)

Matthew 13:19 makes it clear that the reason the sinner didn’t get saved was because they lacked understanding. Satan came when he knew the sinner didn’t have understanding and then he came to catch away the word.

1 Peter 5:8 says, Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about seeking who he may devour.

But the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. (1 Corinthians 2:14)

Watch what happens when a sinner has understanding and hears the Word of the kingdom.

But he that received seed into the good ground is he that hears the word, and understands it; which also bears fruit, and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty some thirty. (Matthew 13:23)

Notice this sinner had understanding and his heart was prepared to receive the Word of God. The verse said “received into the good ground” which is his heart. The sinner who rejected the gospel never had a prepared heart. It makes no mention of it. It says he didn’t have any understanding. So the prepared heart comes first then understanding.

Pray for them to have understanding of the Word of God when they receive it. If they don’t then they won’t get saved. I think this is one of the most important things to pray for when praying for a sinner.

#4 Sense of urgency

(Read Jonah chapter 3 for a good example of this.)

The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness, but is longsuffering to us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)

You don’t know what shall happen during the next day. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away. (James 4:14)

Boast not yourself of tomorrow; for you don’t know what a day may bring forth. (Prov. 27:1)

Therefore be ready: for in such an hour that you think not the Son of man will come. (Matthew 24:44)

Some people think they have all of the time in the world to repent and get right with God. Any day now the rapture will happen. It could be today, tomorrow, next week, next month or whenever. If we are not right with God when the rapture happens then we will be left behind. We are not promised our next breath. Every day people are taken out of this world when they die. Do you think they plannned on dying that day? Each one of us should do some soul searching every day and make sure we are right with God and ready if we die or the rapture happens today. Don’t play games with God because you will lose and lose royally! I feel led to warn you that if you are playing around with God and living in sin and refuse to repent. There will be a day that you will be very sorry. Ask yourself where you to spend eternity.

Pray for sinners to seriously consider where they want to spend eternity and realize that they are not promised their next breath. The next time they go to a funeral they should ask themselves “What if that was me in that coffin”. Think about all the people who die each day in a car accident, shot, stabbed, natural causes, etc.

#5 Grace and faith

For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

The combination of grace and faith helps lead souls to Christ. Grace is the divine influence upon the heart and it’s reflection in the life. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1) It doesn’t matter how good a person is because you can’t earn salvation or work your way into heaven.

Pray that sinners will realize it is God’s grace to them that allows them the opportunity to get saved (John 3:16) and God imparts to us the faith to believe in Jesus when we hear the gospel.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Rom. 10:17)

#6 Work of the Holy Spirit to be completed in the life of every sinner with no hindrances

And when He is come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on Me; Of righteousness, because I go to My Father, and you see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. (John 16:8-11)

The Holy Spirit does the convicting not us. We witness, the Holy Spirit convicts, draws and deals with the sinners. His work is VERY important in the body of Christ and the world. He deals with sinners to get saved and believers to repent. He empowers and enables us to proclaim the gospel. (Acts 1:8) And reveals the truth of the Word of God. (Luke 4:18-19)

#7 Reveal God to sinners

God reveals Himself to sinners and saints in several different ways.

Moses in the burning bush (Exodus 3:2)

Paul on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:1-19)

Joseph in a dream (Genesis 37:5-11)

Hagar by an angel (Genesis 16:6-14)

God spoke to Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3)

#8 Laws of sowing and reaping

And herein is that saying true, One sows, and another reaps. I sent you to reap that whereon you bestowed no labor: other men labored, and you are entered into their labors. (John 4:37-38)

Pray for sinners who have never heard the gospel to hear it today and accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. And for sinners who have already heard the gospel. That God will send a believer into their path to continue to witness to them.

#9 God’s perfect will to be done in every sinner

The thief comes not, but for to steal, to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (John 10:10)

Jesus loves the sinner so much that He not only wants to save them but He wants them to be totally blessed in every area of their life. He cares about ALL of their life. Whether it be healing, deliverance, or a financial blessing orwhatever they need or desire.

#10 They must confess Jesus is Lord

That if you shall confess with your mouth “Jesus is Lord” and shall believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)

It is not enough to believe in your heart that Jesus is Lord. You must confess with your mouth to receive salvation. Ask and you shall receive. If they don’t ask Jesus to save them and forgive them then He won’t. Jesus loves every sinner and wants to save them. He will not force Himself on anybody. They must ask and then He will save them.

For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Romans 10:10)

Many people are deceived by thinking that all they have to do is believe in the existence of Jesus or have knowledge of who He is. It is not enough to believe that Jesus died on the cross, you must confess with your mouth and ask for forgiveness of sin. Ask Jesus to come into your heart and be your personal Lord and Savior.

"If you want to be a leader then lead people to Jesus. If you want to be a follower then follow the footsteps of Jesus".
