v.1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
“beseech” means to call upon someone to do something, to exhort and admonish
“walk” means to tread all around
“vocation” means invitation to the kingdom of God and it’s privileges
v.2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
“longsuffering” means patience with people
“forbearing” means have patience with in regard to the errors or weaknesses of anyone
v.3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
“endeavouring” means to put forth an effort
v.4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
“body” means all Christians
“hope” means the God of all hope
“calling” means the divine call by which Christians are introduced into the privileges of the gospel
v.5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
“Lord” means supreme in authority
“faith” means Christian doctrine
“baptism” means the baptism instituted by Jesus
v.6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
v.7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
“grace” means the benefits of being a Christian
v.8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
“ascended” means to have communion with God or to dwell there
“captive” means to capture
v.9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
v.10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
v.11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, pastors and teachers;
“apostles” means an ambassador of the gospel
“prophets” means speaking from an immediate revelation as relating to future events or the mind of the Spirit
“evangelists” means a preacher of the gospel who travels as a missionary and establish churches
“pastors” means the spiritual guide of a particular church
“teachers” means an instructor of the Bible who explains it to others for a better understanding
v.12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
“perfecting” means complete furnishing
“ministry” means the office of ministering in divine things
“edifying” means to charge up or build up
v.13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
“unity” means oneness
“knowledge” means recognition, full discernment, acknowledgment
“perfect” means of Christian faith and virtue
“stature” means maturity
“fulness” means reaching the intended goal
v.14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
“children” means to condemn
“tossed” means to surge, to fluctuate
“carried” means to convey around, transport hither and thither
“doctrine” means perverse teaching
“sleight” means gambling
“craftiness” means trickery
“deceive” means fraudulence, a straying, error
v.15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
v.16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
“body” means an organized whole made up of parts and members
“fitly” means to render close-jointed together, organize compactly
“compacted” means to drive together, unite, to infer, show, teach
“joint” means a ligament
“supplieth” means contribution
v.17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
“testify” means to be adduced as a witness, to obtest
“walk” means to tread all around, walk at large (especially as proof of ability); to live, deport oneself, follow (as a companion or votary)
“vanity” means folly, perverseness, wickedness
v.18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
“understanding” means deep thought
“darkened” means to obscure
“alienated” means a stranger
“ignorance” means ignorance of God and divine things
“blindness” means hardness
“heart” means mind
v.19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
“lasciviousness” means perversion
“uncleanness” means moral uncleanness
“greediness” means covetousness
v.20 But ye have not so learned Christ;
“learned” means doctrines & precepts
v.21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
v.22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
“conversation” means behavior
“the old man” means the disposition which is created and cherished by the new nature that Jesus Christ gives to the believer
“corrupt” means to make depraved
“deceitful” means delusion
“lusts” means a longing for what is forbidden
v.23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
“renewed” means to renovate, reform
v.24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
“created” means to create and form in a spiritual sense
“righteousness” means Christian justification
v.25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
“truth” means evidence in relation to facts
v.26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
“angry” means to provoke or enrage
“wrath” means rage
v.27 Neither give place to the devil.
v.28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
“labour” means to work hard
v.29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
“corrupt” means rotten, worthless
v.30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
“grieve” means to distress, to be sad
“sealed” means to stamp (with a signet or private mark) for security or preservation, to keep secret, to attest
“redemption” means the soul from the body as it’s prison
v.31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
“clamour” means an outcry
“malice” means badness, depravity, malignity, trouble
v.32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
“kind” means employed, useful in manner or morals
“tenderhearted” means well compassioned, sympathetic
